New Smyrna Beach Cardboard Boat Race
October 10th, 2010
(as with all pages on our website, click on photos to see larger version, then click "Back" or "Return" button in your browers to come back to this page)

Thanks to Ray & Melva Abrams, we found out about and entered two cardboard boats in the New Smyrna Beach Cardboard Boat Race at the Marine Discovery Center, NSB.

Building the Boats
We met on a Saturday to form two teams and build the boats. A fierce competition ensued!  Who would build the better boat?  Who would have the faster Helmswoman?  (is that really a word Ken?)

The first team selected the name "Nordic Mermaid" to be commandeered by ReRe Anderson, and the second boat had a little trouble deciding and went with a "Rebel" theme (what else are you going to do when Dick Grimshaw, Fran Klindt, Rick Chandler and Doug Willis are involved?!) to be commandeered by Theresa Willis.

Team "Nordic Mermaid" starts construction:

As does team "Rebel something or other":

ReRe begins a very lovely and appropriate mermaid design for their boat...
And the other team... hmmmm, appropriate? Not so much! We will do some more thinking about this...
Perhaps we should build a boat around our boat - yeah two boats in one!

Hey guys, should there be a gaping hole in the bow or our boat???  I'm just sayin...

Even the kids AND dogs came to show their support!
Ray made sure EVERONE knew the rules!
Ms. Mary kept the kids on the run and out of our hair!
The Abrams and Kirbys made sure we had a delicious lunch and snacks (notice who is ready in line for any little tidbit!)
The Nordic Mermaids are pretty happy with their boat so far. (I can just picture the boys in their mermaid outfits!)
The Rebels are thinking things are looking better now... well the boat anyway!

The Competitors
Viking woman ReRe Anderson

with her boat, Nordic Mermaid

Oh let's not forget her sidekick Thor (ok I made that name up, but it fits doesn't it??)

and her fiesty competitor, Pirate Wench Theresa "Arrrrgh!" Willis

with her boat REBEL

The Big Race
The crowd gathers as the 6 boats are taken to the water; the boats are hoisted at the bank above the water line waiting for the signal to GO!  ReRe Anderson in Nordic Mermaid immediately takes the lead and heads towards the kayak marker which the boats have to go around to qualify.

The competition is fierce! Theresa Willis in REBEL is not giving up yet!  Is it luck or planning that Theresa decides to go around the left of the Kayak instead of the right like the other boats?  Either way, it was a great move because the water current worked in her favor.

The boats are on their way back to shore, and now ReRe is giving it all she's got!  Look at that wake she's creating!  (HEY isn't this a No Wake Zone??)

Theresa was determined to win (as we later found out her "dear" husband told her "Theresa, 2nd place is NOT acceptable!")  I hate to think what would have happened to her if she had not paddled her little heart out and got to shore first.

ReRe quickly closes the gap and comes in a close 2nd (apparently she had NOT received a threat from her husband!)  What a great job our two Helmswomen did, we are so proud of you both!

Congratulations and thank you to the First and Second Place Winners, you truly did an outstanding job representing our club!

Here is the Big Race on VIDEO if you missed it!
